The Two Main Restaurant Zones in Budapest

To put it simply, there are two areas in Budapest where bars and restaurants are abundant: one is in the oblong Liszt Ferenc square just off Andrassy Avenue (1 minute from Oktogon square), and the other is in Raday street, a few minutes from the Central Market Hall and Liberty Bridge (Szabadsag Hid). Check out our luxury Budapest map for their location (indicated by the 'Fork and Knife' sign). Needless to say, there are other great restaurants in Budapest, so we will make reviews on them soon, too. The site is continuously growing, please bear with us.

What Hungarian Food Shall I Try?

Dishes you must try are goose liver, roast goose-drums with stewed red cabbage and potato, (meatball) stuffed cabbage with sour cream (typical wedding dish), meat pancake in Hortobagy stlye,Ujhazy chicken soup packed with fresh, characteristic vegetables (meat soup is the ever Sunday soup probably at most Hungarian families!), the well-known goulash (don't leave this rich, thick soup for the night, instead, eat it at midday! It's about as rich as gumbo soup.), catfish stew with cottage cheese noodles and sour cream, etc., etc. There are fantastic pastries, so make room for the desserts too (pies, strudels, cakes, marzipan, etc.).

Is Hungarian Food Healthy?

If you are a meat eater, the good news is that some of the Hungarian animal breeds like mangalica (indigenous pig breed) or szurke marha (indigenous cattle breed, the grey cattle) are famous for having very low cholesterol levels and being resistant to common diseases (like BSE). Their prices are up, no wonder, so an average restaurant will be more likely selling normal pork or beef. For herbivores, the bright side is that Hungarian vegetables and fruits are still full of flavour (although supermarkets are increasingly pushing less tasty - more showy, less ripe, more GM variants), so it is worth checking some of the produces at the Central Market Hall in Budapest (you can also try sausages, salamis, or buy souvenirs at the hall). That being said, traditional Hungarian dishes are quite stodgy and spicy, but these days chefs are finding a way to preserve the values of Hungarian gastronomy while making dishes more and more healthy (e.g. using low-cholesterol pork and beef as mentioned above, using more vegetable oil and less lard, etc.).

In addition, the wine making as well as the wine drinking culture has developed considerably since the unimaginative communist era, bringing back the heydays of vineries in Hungary, and adding some more. Ask the waiter for matching wines, and ask for the wine list to check the prices to avoid unpleasant surprises.
